O-line heavyweights offer safe route

If I'm Jerry Angelo, I'm feeling pretty good right about now considering all the top-tier offensive linemen that will be there for the taking in late April. It's really extremely simple. The Bears' front wall needs major reconstruction after steadily crumbling before our eyes last season on a weekly basis. If the Bears stay put with the No. 14th pick overall, I believe they can't go wrong with ANY of the seven offensive linemen widely expected to be taken in the first round -- OTs Jake Long, Ryan Clady, Chris Williams, Jeff Otah, Sam Baker, Gosder Cherlius and OT-OG Branden Albert. I'm particularly intrigued by Albert, who has the ability to excel right away as a guard or tackle at the pro level and would be my preferred choice if I were Angelo, the thought being Long will be long gone by the time the Bears pick. He has been identified by PFW's Nolan Nawrocki as one of the most underrated players in the draft, and he would look perfect in a Bears uniform. Same goes for a Packers uniform, although it would take some maneuvering from GM Ted thompson to make something like that happen. I'll tackle the Packers in tomorrow's blog, with emphasis on their need for a QB behind Aaron Rodgers and how quickly they should work during the draft in filling that need. Today, though, I'm thinking mostly about meat and potatoes.

Will all 7 of the top-rated O-linemen end up being worthy? That could be a stretch. But the odds of all of them developing into decent pros are a lot better than at any other position. They all fall into the better-safe-than-sorry  category, and it will be a surprise any of the seven fall into the second round.
