Boston College OT Gosder Cherilus

Boston College OT Gosder Cherilus said when he's not working out he likes to relax by playing his new acoustic guitar -- and none of that Guitar Hero business. But this week he has been hard at work battling a decent crop of defensive ends. Cherilus has held up well at times, showing a mean streak, but he also has been a little wooden in pass-rush drills. Here's what he had to say about that:

How important are the one-on-one drills the linemen do here?

GC: When you come out here sometimes, I feel like it’s not fair for offensive linemen in one-on-one. The defensive linemen don’t have to read anything; it’s like just you and them. So when you come out here and you do well at it, you feel good. You feel like you can block anything. They don’t have to read if it’s a three-step pass or a draw or anything. All they have to do is beat you (on a pass rush). When you go out there one-on-one knowing that they have all the advantages, and you still do well against them, it’s a great feeling.

Most offensive lines work in tandem, too.

GC: Yes, you don’t know if I am going to have inside help or be one-on-one so it’s tough. But when you come out here and do it, and do well at it, that’s a good feeling. You can only get better by doing it.

As a taller guy, is it tough to deal with some of these smaller, quicker ends?

GC: Hmm, not really. Sometimes it could be tough, but I have been doing that for a while. I work at it. It’s a challenge. You watch film on some guys, see their weaknesses, see what he likes to do. Sometimes with a smaller guy, they like to run by the quarterback. You outweigh them, so you try to use that to your advantage and hopefully give your quarterback enough time to throw the ball.

What is the DL competition like? Anyone catch your eye? Anyone stand out?

GC: All these guys are good. They are here for a reason. When you come out here and do well against one of these guys, you can go home and sleep well because you know you just went up against the best and were successful.

How did the Boston College offense, especially with more of a pro-style attack put in this year, prepare you for this?

GC: It helped a lot. I think I am pretty good at both run blocking and pass blocking, so I am proud of that. As an offensive lineman, you don’t want to be known as a pass guy or a run guy only. You just want to make yourself versatile. They call a run play, you give 110 percent; when it’s time to throw the ball, you do the same and give your quarterback a chance.
